Romania 18th state of the Unitary patent system as of 1 September 2024

As of 1 September 2024 the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) enters into force in Romania, increasing the number of the unitary patent system’s member states to 18. Romania deposited its ratification of the UPCA on 31 May 2024.Romania ratifies Unified Patent Court Agreement

European patents taking up unitary effect from 1 September 2024 automatically cover Romania as well as Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Sweden.

The UPCA has been signed by 24 European Union states. Six signatory states (Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Ireland and Slovakia) are still completing their ratification process.
